P0101 Mass or Volume Air Flow "A" Circuit Range/Performance

Fuel and air

P0101 means the mass airflow (MAF) sensor's reading doesn't make sense, usually from a dirty sensor or an air leak after it.

The mass airflow (MAF) sensor measures how much air the engine takes in. The engine computer compares that with what it expects from engine speed, throttle opening and other sensors. P0101 means the MAF reading doesn't make sense against the rest, even though the sensor is connected.

Can I keep driving? Yes, but get it fixed soon.

Usually drivable, but the engine may hesitate, idle rough or stall. Get it looked at soon.

Common causes

  1. A dirty MAF sensor element (oil from an oiled air filter, dust or debris)
  2. An air leak between the MAF sensor and the throttle body (cracked intake boot, loose clamp)
  3. A clogged air filter
  4. A failing MAF sensor
  5. Wiring or connector problems at the sensor

Symptoms

  • Hesitation or stumbling when accelerating
  • Rough idle or stalling
  • Poor fuel economy, sometimes lean or rich codes (P0171, P0172)

What to check first

  1. Check the air filter and the intake boot after the MAF sensor for cracks and loose clamps.
  2. Clean the MAF sensor with spray made for MAF sensors (not brake or carb cleaner); don't touch the wires inside.
  3. With a scan tool, compare MAF readings at idle and at higher rpm with typical values for your engine.
  4. Check the connector for corrosion or bent pins.
