P0217 Engine Coolant Over Temperature Condition

Cooling

P0217 means the engine is overheating, or at least the coolant sensor says it is. Pull over and shut it off.

The engine computer measured coolant temperature above its safe limit: the engine is overheating, or at least the sensor says it is.

Can I keep driving? Not if you can avoid it.

Pull over and shut the engine off as soon as it's safe. Driving an overheating engine can warp the head and blow the head gasket. Don't open the radiator cap while hot.

Common causes

  1. Low coolant from a leak
  2. A failed cooling fan, fan relay or fan clutch
  3. A stuck-closed thermostat
  4. A failing water pump
  5. A clogged radiator
  6. A head gasket leak pushing combustion gas into the coolant

Symptoms

  • Temperature gauge in the red, warning message
  • Steam or a sweet coolant smell
  • Loss of power (some vehicles cut power when hot)

Common on: Ford Escape

Known problems: Ford 1.5L and 1.6L EcoBoost coolant loss, overheating and misfires

What to check first

  1. Let the engine cool completely, then check the coolant level in the reservoir and radiator.
  2. Look for leaks: hoses, radiator, water pump, heater core (wet carpet).
  3. With the engine running and AC on, check the cooling fans turn on.
  4. If it keeps overheating with full coolant and working fans, have the thermostat, water pump and head gasket checked.
