P0351 Ignition Coil "A" Primary/Secondary Circuit

Ignition and misfire

P0351 means there's a fault in ignition coil A's circuit (usually cylinder 1), so that cylinder may misfire.

The engine computer has found a problem in the circuit for ignition coil A, which on most engines fires cylinder 1. The coil may not be firing.

Can I keep driving? Yes, but get it fixed soon.

Expect a misfire on that cylinder. If the check-engine light flashes, stop driving to protect the catalytic converter; otherwise get it fixed soon.

Common causes

  1. A failed ignition coil
  2. An unplugged, loose or corroded coil connector
  3. Damaged wiring to the coil
  4. A coil driver problem in the engine computer (rare)

Symptoms

  • Misfire on one cylinder (often with P0301)
  • Rough idle, loss of power
  • Check-engine light

What to check first

  1. Check the coil's connector and wiring.
  2. Swap the coil with another cylinder and see whether the code moves (to P0352, for example).
  3. Check for power at the coil connector with the key on.
  4. Replace the coil if the fault follows it.
