P0410 Secondary Air Injection System "A"
Emissions
P0410 means the secondary air injection system (an air pump used right after cold starts) isn't working.
Some engines pump fresh air into the exhaust for the first minute after a cold start to heat up the catalytic converter. P0410 means that system isn't working as expected.
Safe to drive. It only affects emissions right after cold starts, but it will fail an emissions inspection.
Common causes
- A failed air pump (often from water getting in)
- A failed air pump relay or fuse
- A stuck check valve or combination valve
- A cracked or disconnected hose
- Carbon-clogged air passages in the cylinder head (some engines)
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- A loud whine or no sound from the air pump after cold starts
What to check first
- Listen for the air pump running for about a minute after a cold start.
- Check the pump's fuse and relay.
- Inspect the hoses and check valve for moisture and damage.
- Check for service bulletins: some vehicles have known pump and valve problems.
