P0524 Engine Oil Pressure Too Low

Oil pressure

P0524 means the engine computer measured dangerously low oil pressure. Stop and check the oil.

The engine computer measured oil pressure below its safe limit for the engine's speed. Unlike the sensor codes, this one means the computer believes pressure really is low.

Can I keep driving? Not if you can avoid it.

Stop the engine as soon as it's safe and check the oil. Running an engine without enough oil pressure can destroy it within minutes.

Common causes

  1. Low oil level
  2. The wrong oil viscosity, or oil diluted with fuel
  3. A clogged oil filter or oil pump pickup screen
  4. A worn oil pump or worn engine bearings
  5. A failing oil pressure sensor (possible, but don't assume it)

Symptoms

  • Oil pressure light
  • Ticking, tapping or knocking from the engine
  • Low oil pressure gauge reading

Known problems: GM V8 oil pressure sensor and screen (P0521)

What to check first

  1. Check the oil level right away and top up if low.
  2. Don't keep driving to see if it goes away: have oil pressure checked with a mechanical gauge.
  3. Check that the oil and filter are correct for your engine.
  4. If pressure is truly low with correct oil, the engine needs diagnosis before more driving.
