P0705 Transmission Range Sensor "A" Circuit (PRNDL Input)
Transmission
P0705 means the transmission range sensor (which reports the shifter position) has a circuit fault.
The transmission range sensor tells the computers which gear the shifter is in (Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive). P0705 means its signal is missing or doesn't make sense, such as two positions at once.
Be careful: the vehicle may start in gear, not start in Park, or the gear display and reverse lights may be wrong. Get it fixed soon.
Common causes
- A misadjusted or failed range sensor (also called the neutral safety switch)
- A loose or corroded connector (often near the transmission and exposed to road splash)
- Damaged wiring
- A misadjusted shift cable
Symptoms
- No start in Park, or it starts in Neutral only
- Wrong gear shown on the dash
- Harsh or odd shifting, reverse lights not working
What to check first
- Check the shift cable adjustment and that the shifter fully engages each position.
- Inspect the range sensor's connector and wiring.
- Watch the range sensor reading with a scan tool as you move the shifter (with the brake on).
- Adjust or replace the sensor as your service information describes.
