P2196 O2 Sensor Signal Biased/Stuck Rich (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
Oxygen sensors
P2196 means bank 1's front oxygen sensor reads rich when it shouldn't, from a rich condition or a contaminated sensor.
The front oxygen sensor on bank 1 reads rich when it shouldn't. Either the sensor is biased or contaminated, or the engine really is running rich.
Usually drivable, but running rich can damage the catalytic converter. Get it checked soon.
Common causes
- A contaminated or failing front sensor
- A real rich condition (leaking injector, high fuel pressure, MAF over-reading)
- Coolant or oil burning
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Poor fuel economy, fuel smell
What to check first
- Check fuel trims and for P0172.
- Check for a leaking injector or high fuel pressure.
- Clean the MAF sensor.
- Replace the front sensor if the mixture is otherwise normal.
