Common check-engine codes on the Ford Fusion

2006-2020

Fusions share engines with the Escape and Explorer. Electronic throttle body problems on 2010-2012 models were common enough that Ford issued bulletins and an extended-coverage program; EcoBoost models from 2013 on share the Escape's coolant problems.

Most common: P2111, P2135, P0300, P0171, P0455, P0700.

Known problems on the Ford Fusion

P2111 Throttle Actuator "A" Control System - Stuck Open

P2111 means the electronic throttle is stuck more open than commanded.

On the Ford Fusion: Throttle stuck open or idle problems (P2111, P2112, P2135) on 2010-2012 Fusions: Ford issued a bulletin with a redesigned throttle body and an extended-coverage program for some vehicles. Most coverage has now expired, but ask a dealer with your VIN.

P2135 Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch "A"/"B" Voltage Correlation

P2135 means the two throttle position sensors disagree, so the engine computer limits power; usually a failing throttle body.

On the Ford Fusion: Throttle position correlation: usually the electronic throttle body.

P2135: causes, can I keep driving, and what to check first →

P0300 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

P0300 means the engine is misfiring in more than one cylinder, often from worn plugs or coils, a vacuum leak or low fuel pressure.

On the Ford Fusion: Misfires: plugs and coils; on 1.5L and 1.6L EcoBoost models, misfire at cold start can be coolant getting into a cylinder; check the coolant level and recalls.

P0300: causes, can I keep driving, and what to check first →

P0171 System Too Lean (Bank 1)

P0171 means bank 1 is running lean (too much air or too little fuel), most often from a vacuum leak or a dirty MAF sensor.

On the Ford Fusion: Lean: PCV and vacuum leaks or a dirty MAF sensor.

P0171: causes, can I keep driving, and what to check first →

P0455 Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (Large Leak)

P0455 means the EVAP system has a large leak, most often a loose, missing or bad gas cap.

On the Ford Fusion: Large EVAP leak: the capless filler neck or the purge valve.

P0455: causes, can I keep driving, and what to check first →

P0700 Transmission Control System (MIL Request)

P0700 means the transmission computer has stored its own fault code; read the transmission codes to find the real problem.

On the Ford Fusion: Transmission fault flag on the 6-speed automatic; read the transmission codes.

P0700: causes, can I keep driving, and what to check first →
