P0014 "B" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)

Engine timing

P0014 means bank 1's exhaust camshaft is more advanced than commanded or isn't responding, usually from oil, solenoid or phaser problems.

The bank 1 camshaft B (usually the exhaust cam) is more advanced than the engine computer commanded, or its variable valve timing isn't responding as expected.

Can I keep driving? Yes, but get it fixed soon.

Check the oil level now. Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed soon.

Common causes

  1. Low or dirty oil
  2. A sticking exhaust variable valve timing solenoid
  3. A worn exhaust cam phaser
  4. A stretched timing chain

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Rough idle
  • Rattle at start-up on some engines

What to check first

  1. Check and change the oil if needed.
  2. Inspect the exhaust cam solenoid and its screen.
  3. Compare commanded and actual exhaust cam timing with a scan tool.
  4. Check for service bulletins for your engine.
