Trouble codes › P0011
P0011 "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)
Engine timing
P0011 means bank 1's intake camshaft is more advanced than the engine computer asked for, usually from low or dirty oil or a sticking variable valve timing solenoid.
Engines with variable valve timing use oil pressure, through a solenoid, to adjust the camshaft's timing. P0011 means the bank 1 intake camshaft (camshaft "A" on most engines) is more advanced than the engine computer asked for, or isn't responding as expected.
Check the oil level right away. If the oil is low or the engine rattles or runs badly, don't keep driving. Otherwise drive gently and get it diagnosed soon.
Common causes
- Low engine oil, or oil that's old, sludged or the wrong viscosity (very common)
- A sticking or failing variable valve timing (oil control) solenoid, or a clogged screen at the solenoid
- A worn or failing cam phaser
- A stretched timing chain or a timing component out of place
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Rough idle, stalling or hesitation
- Sometimes a rattle at start-up (phaser or chain)
- Poor fuel economy
Common on: Ford F-150, Toyota Camry, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Highlander, Ford Expedition
Known problems: Ford 5.4L 3-valve cam phasers and timing
What to check first
- Check the oil level and condition; if it's due or dark, change it with the oil weight your owner's manual specifies, then clear the code.
- Inspect the variable valve timing solenoid and its screen (if it has one) for sludge.
- With a scan tool, compare commanded and actual cam timing, and activate the solenoid if your tool can.
- If it returns along with a rattle or cam/crank correlation codes (P0016), suspect timing chain stretch or a phaser; look for service bulletins for your engine.
