P0335 Crankshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit

Engine timing

P0335 means the engine computer isn't getting a usable crankshaft position sensor signal, which can cause stalling or a no-start.

The crankshaft position sensor tells the engine computer the crankshaft's speed and position, which it needs for spark and fuel timing. P0335 means the computer isn't getting a usable signal from that sensor.

Can I keep driving? Not if you can avoid it.

The engine may stall without warning or not start, so be careful: stalling in traffic is dangerous. Get it fixed before relying on the vehicle.

Common causes

  1. A failed crankshaft position sensor (common, often heat-related)
  2. Damaged wiring or a loose or corroded connector
  3. A damaged reluctor (tone) ring or debris on the sensor tip
  4. Excess gap between the sensor and the reluctor ring

Symptoms

  • Engine cranks but won't start
  • Stalling, especially when hot, sometimes restarting after it cools
  • Misfires or rough running
  • No tachometer reading while cranking on some vehicles

Common on: Nissan Altima, Nissan Rogue, Nissan Sentra

Known problems: Nissan 2.5L crankshaft and camshaft sensor stalling

What to check first

  1. Check the sensor's connector and wiring for damage, oil soaking or corrosion.
  2. Watch the RPM reading on a scan tool (or the tachometer) while cranking: zero RPM while cranking points to the crank sensor circuit.
  3. Check the sensor for metal debris on its tip.
  4. Test the sensor and its power and ground as your service information describes, and use a quality replacement: cheap crank sensors are a common cause of repeat failures.
