P0016 Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor A)

Engine timing

P0016 means the crankshaft and bank 1 intake camshaft signals are out of step, often a stretched timing chain or a stuck cam phaser.

The engine computer compares the crankshaft and camshaft position signals to make sure they stay in step. P0016 means the bank 1 camshaft is out of its expected relationship with the crankshaft, beyond what variable valve timing can explain.

Can I keep driving? Not if you can avoid it.

Avoid driving until it's checked if the engine rattles, runs badly or is hard to start. A timing chain that has jumped a tooth or is badly stretched can lead to serious engine damage.

Common causes

  1. A stretched timing chain or worn guides and tensioner (common on some engines)
  2. A cam phaser stuck or worn
  3. Low or dirty oil affecting variable valve timing
  4. A timing belt or chain that has jumped a tooth
  5. A failing cam or crank position sensor, or a damaged reluctor ring (less common)

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Rattle at start-up, especially after sitting
  • Hard starting, rough running or loss of power

Common on: Ford F-150, Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Expedition

Known problems: GM 3.6L V6 timing chain stretch · GM 2.4L Ecotec oil consumption and timing chain wear · Ford 5.4L 3-valve cam phasers and timing

What to check first

  1. Check the oil level and condition first.
  2. Look up service bulletins for your engine: many have known timing chain or phaser problems and specific fixes.
  3. With a scan tool, look at cam/crank correlation values if your vehicle reports them; compare with spec.
  4. If the chain is suspect, the timing marks need to be checked; this is usually a shop or advanced DIY job.
