P0496 Evaporative Emission System High Purge Flow
EVAP
P0496 means fuel vapor is being drawn into the engine when it shouldn't be, almost always a stuck-open purge valve.
The engine computer saw fuel vapor being pulled into the engine when the purge valve should be closed. Usually the purge valve is stuck open. (Older scan tools call it "EVAP flow during a non-purge condition.")
Usually safe to drive, but it can cause hard starting or stalling right after filling up. Get it fixed soon if that happens.
Common causes
- A purge valve stuck open (very common)
- A failed purge valve solenoid
- A faulty fuel tank pressure sensor (less common)
Symptoms
- Hard starting or rough idle right after refueling
- Check-engine light
- Sometimes a fuel smell
What to check first
- Disconnect the purge valve's hose and check whether it holds vacuum when the valve is unpowered; it shouldn't pass air.
- Command the valve on and off with a scan tool.
- Replace the purge valve if it's stuck open.
- Check for service bulletins; some vehicles have updated purge valves.
