P0507 Idle Air Control System RPM Higher Than Expected

Fuel and air

P0507 means the engine is idling higher than it should, usually from a vacuum leak or a dirty throttle body.

The engine is idling higher than the engine computer wants, even after it has closed off idle air as far as it can. Usually extra air is getting in.

Can I keep driving? Yes, for now.

Usually safe to drive, but a high idle makes the car push harder against the brakes at stops and can make automatic shifts harsher.

Common causes

  1. A vacuum leak (hose, intake gasket, brake booster hose, PCV)
  2. A dirty or sticking throttle body or IAC valve
  3. A throttle that isn't closing fully
  4. A faulty IAC valve

Symptoms

  • High idle (often 1,000 rpm or more when warm)
  • Harsher shifts into gear
  • Check-engine light

What to check first

  1. Listen for hissing and check vacuum hoses, especially the brake booster and PCV hoses; a smoke test finds hidden leaks.
  2. Clean the throttle body and make sure the throttle plate closes fully.
  3. Check the IAC valve and its wiring if equipped.
  4. Do the idle relearn after cleaning.
