GM 3.6L V6 timing chain stretch
Codes: P0008, P0016, P0017, P0019
On GM's 3.6L V6 (Traverse, Acadia, Enclave, Equinox, Malibu, Camaro, CTS and others), codes P0008, P0009 and P0016-P0019 most often mean the timing chains have stretched, a well-documented problem made worse by low oil and long oil-change intervals.
If it runs normally, you can usually drive it while you plan the repair, but don't put it off: a badly stretched chain can jump a tooth and damage the engine. Stop driving if it rattles loudly, runs rough or struggles to start.
Which vehicles
- Chevrolet Traverse 2009-2017
- GMC Acadia 2007-2016
- Buick Enclave 2008-2017
- Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain (V6) 2010-2017
- Chevrolet Malibu (V6) 2008-2012
- Chevrolet Camaro (V6) 2010-2015
- Cadillac CTS, SRX and STS (3.6L) 2004-2015
Why it happens
The 3.6L uses several long timing chains. As the chains and guides wear, the camshafts fall slightly behind the crankshaft, and the engine computer sets P0008 (bank 1) or P0009 (bank 2), often with P0016-P0019.
Oil matters a lot here. Low oil level, worn-out oil and long oil-change intervals (common with oil-life monitors stretched to the limit) are widely linked to faster chain wear on these engines.
Symptoms
How to confirm it
- Check the oil level and condition first; top up or change it if low or old.
- With a scan tool, read the cam/crank correlation (cam position variance) values; GM's diagnostic procedure compares them with a limit to decide whether the chains need replacing.
- Check for other codes (cam sensors, variable valve timing solenoids) that can cause similar readings.
- Ask a GM dealer to run your VIN for open bulletins and any coverage.
The repair
- The fix is replacing the timing chains, guides and tensioners (GM sells kits). It's a big job, many hours of labor, because the engine front cover comes off; get a firm quote.
- While it's apart, shops often replace the water pump (driven by the timing chain on this engine) and the cam phasers if worn.
- Afterwards, change the oil more often than the oil-life monitor suggests and keep it full.
Recalls, bulletins and warranty programs
- GM bulletin 12-06-01-009 (revisions A-E)
- GM's service bulletin for timing chain kits and guide replacement on the 3.6L, covering P0008, P0009 and P0016-P0019 on 2007-2012 Acadia, 2008-2012 Enclave and 2009-2012 Traverse among others. Repairs were covered within the 5-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
- GM PIP3423 series
- A later GM product information bulletin for the same codes on 2007-2016 Enclave, Traverse and Acadia.
Programs can expire or depend on your VIN. Check nhtsa.gov/recalls and ask a dealer to run your VIN for open recalls, bulletins and extended coverage.
