Common check-engine codes on the Ford Expedition
2005-2023
Expeditions from 2005-2014 use the 5.4L 3-valve V8, known for cam phaser and timing problems; 2015 and later use the 3.5L EcoBoost V6, which shares the F-150's turbo and condensation codes.
Most common: P0011, P0016, P0300, P0299, P0171, P0420.
Known problems on the Ford Expedition
- Ford 5.4L 3-valve cam phasers and timing (P0011, P0012, P0016, P0017)
- Ford 3.5L EcoBoost intercooler condensation misfire (P0300, P0299)
P0011 "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)
P0011 means bank 1's intake camshaft is more advanced than the engine computer asked for, usually from low or dirty oil or a sticking variable valve timing solenoid.
On the Ford Expedition: On the 5.4L 3V, cam phaser and timing problems (P0011, P0012, P0016-P0018) are well known, with a knock at hot idle. Oil level and condition first.

P0016 Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor A)
P0016 means the crankshaft and bank 1 intake camshaft signals are out of step, often a stretched timing chain or a stuck cam phaser.
On the Ford Expedition: Cam/crank correlation on the 5.4L 3V (chains, guides, phasers) or on some EcoBoost engines (cam phasers).
P0016: causes, can I keep driving, and what to check first →
P0300 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0300 means the engine is misfiring in more than one cylinder, often from worn plugs or coils, a vacuum leak or low fuel pressure.
On the Ford Expedition: Misfires: worn plugs and coils on the 5.4L (plugs can be hard to remove on early engines); intercooler condensation or worn plugs on the EcoBoost.
P0300: causes, can I keep driving, and what to check first →
P0299 Turbocharger/Supercharger "A" Underboost Condition
P0299 means the turbo or supercharger isn't making the boost the engine asked for, most often from a boost leak.
On the Ford Expedition: Underboost on the 3.5L EcoBoost: intercooler hose leaks or wastegate problems.
P0299: causes, can I keep driving, and what to check first →
P0171 System Too Lean (Bank 1)
P0171 means bank 1 is running lean (too much air or too little fuel), most often from a vacuum leak or a dirty MAF sensor.
On the Ford Expedition: Lean codes, often with P0174: PCV and intake leaks or a dirty MAF sensor.
P0171: causes, can I keep driving, and what to check first →
P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
P0420 means the catalytic converter on bank 1 isn't cleaning the exhaust well enough, usually a worn converter, an exhaust leak or a lazy oxygen sensor.
On the Ford Expedition: Catalyst efficiency, often with P0430; check for exhaust manifold leaks (broken studs are common on the 5.4L).
P0420: causes, can I keep driving, and what to check first →
