Ford 5.4L 3-valve cam phasers and timing
Codes: P0011, P0012, P0016, P0017, P0340
On Ford's 5.4L 3-valve V8 (2004-2010 F-150, Expedition and Navigator), cam phaser and timing chain problems are well known, causing a ticking or diesel-like knock at idle and codes P0011, P0012, P0016 and P0017.
Usually drivable short term, but don't ignore a loud knock: worn phasers and chain guides can fail and damage the engine. Check the oil level and condition first.
Which vehicles
- Ford F-150 2004-2010
- Ford Expedition 2005-2014
- Lincoln Navigator 2005-2014
- Ford F-250 and F-350 (5.4L 3V) 2005-2010
Why it happens
The 3-valve engines use oil-pressure-driven cam phasers and long timing chains with plastic guides. Low oil pressure, sludge, worn guides and worn phasers let the cam timing wander, setting cam timing codes and making a knock at hot idle.
Oil condition and level matter a lot on this engine; a sticking variable cam timing solenoid can also cause the codes.
Symptoms
How to confirm it
- Check the oil level and change the oil with the specified weight if it's due or dirty; a sticking solenoid can sometimes free up.
- Check the variable cam timing solenoids (resistance, and commanding them with a scan tool).
- Listen at hot idle; a knock that goes away with a little throttle often points to the phasers.
- Ask a Ford dealer to check bulletins for your VIN; Ford issued bulletins on 3-valve engine noise (for example TSB 10-18-4 for a hot-idle knock from the right-hand phaser on 2009-2010 trucks).
The repair
- The usual fix is a timing set: chains, guides, tensioners and both phasers, plus the solenoids. It's a big job with the front cover off.
- Use quality parts and change the oil on a shorter interval afterwards.
Recalls, bulletins and warranty programs
- Ford TSB 10-18-4
- Low-frequency knocking at hot idle on 2009-2010 vehicles with the 5.4L 3V, traced to the right-hand variable cam timing phaser, with a replacement procedure.
Programs can expire or depend on your VIN. Check nhtsa.gov/recalls and ask a dealer to run your VIN for open recalls, bulletins and extended coverage.
