P0012 "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1)
Engine timing
P0012 means bank 1's intake camshaft is more retarded than commanded, often stuck in its parked position from oil, solenoid or phaser problems.
The bank 1 camshaft A (usually intake) is more retarded than the engine computer commanded, often stuck in its parked position.
Check the oil level now. Usually drivable, but expect rough running or a rattle. Get it diagnosed soon.
Common causes
- Low or dirty oil, or the wrong viscosity
- A sticking variable valve timing solenoid or clogged screen
- A worn or stuck cam phaser
- A stretched timing chain
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Rough idle, stalling
- Rattle at start-up
Known problems: Ford 5.4L 3-valve cam phasers and timing
What to check first
- Check and change the oil if it's low, dirty or the wrong weight.
- Inspect the solenoid and its screen for sludge.
- Compare commanded and actual cam timing with a scan tool.
- If it returns with rattling, suspect the phaser or chain and check for service bulletins.
